Medicare's Annual Enrollment Window: What It's For and How to Use It

Each year, Medicare has an Annual Enrollment Period that runs from October 15 to December 7. It's the window when you can review your current coverage and make changes that take effect at the start of the next year.

The purpose of this article is simple: to explain what the window is for, so you can use it well. It is general education, not a recommendation of any specific plan.

What you can do during the window

During the Annual Enrollment Period, you can generally:

  • Review and change your prescription drug coverage.
  • Switch between Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

Whether any of these makes sense depends entirely on your own health needs, the doctors and pharmacies you use, and the medications you take.

A neutral way to review your coverage

Plans can change their details from year to year, so it's worth reviewing yours even if you're happy with it. A balanced review usually looks at:

  • Your medications: Are they still covered, and how are they handled under the plan's drug list?
  • Your providers: Are the doctors and facilities you use still in network?
  • Your total expected costs: Premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket exposure for how you actually use care - not just the premium.
  • Your priorities: Some people value predictability; others value flexibility. Neither is "better."

There is no single best choice here. Original Medicare with a supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan are simply different structures, and the right fit varies from person to person.

Where to get reliable information

The official Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov lets you compare options based on your own drugs and providers. You can also speak with a licensed agent who can walk through the options with you neutrally.

The bottom line

The Annual Enrollment Period is a chance to make sure your coverage still fits your life. Reviewing it is worthwhile; rushing it is not.
